This press release is a response to the article published last week in the AJC confirming that Candidate for Governor Stacy Abrams and others support gambling, which means money over the destruction of the family units and those children that are preyed upon by the gambling industry, especially the lower income families. Seaver also states, “Georgia collected over $5 billion in surplus collected at the end of fiscal year 2022. It is absolutely absurd that Georgia needs to generate more revenues.”
Georgia has been the target of the gambling industry for years. This past session there were eighty-four (84) gambling lobbyists schmoozing our legislators under the Gold Dome in Atlanta. To put that in context, Georgia only has 56 State Senators!
The gambling pushers are well-connected and well-funded. They produce slick, persuasive propaganda and provide nice perks. So, the gambling lobby is gaining the support of influential legislators.
A proposed statewide referendum to decide whether or not to legalize gambling in Georgia is a disingenuous proposition. Make no mistake, the gambling lobby will pump millions of dollars to fund misleading propaganda in Georgia. Would the people have balanced and accurate information on which to base their votes? As we speak, our airwaves are filled with gambling promotions and even young children are being groomed as future gamblers, with pop-up ads on their computer games!
Gambling is addictive and can lead to divorce and the destruction of families. Research in Georgia published by UGA, Terry Business College, Mercer, Emory, Georgia State University & the Congressional Gambling Study Commission indicates that commercialized gambling leads to reduced on-the-job productivity, depression, and increased stress-related illnesses, and suicide attempts, spawned by overwhelming debt, bankruptcy, and hopelessness.
Legalized gambling will not bring additional resources into our state budget for education. These assertions are misleading and false. In states where gambling is legal, for every dollar that gambling brings in, research shows three dollars are spent on social programs to combat the negative societal impact of gambling.
Legalized gambling would hurt Georgia's families, Georgia's economy and Georgia's schools. To protect the future of Georgia, it is crucial to prevent the legalization of gambling in our state!
As a mother and lifelong activist on issues affecting women and children, I cannot stand by silently, while power brokers allow commercialized gambling to be legalized in Georgia, under the misleading mantra, "it's for the children." This is simply not true! Gambling will not help the children of Georgia.
Georgia needs a Governor and Lt. Governor who will stand up to the gambling lobby and our elected officials who are being deceived by them. We don't need legalized gambling in Georgia! We must not gamble with the future of our state!
